Terengganu claw Kedah; Selangor girls impress

Defending champions Terengganu bounced back from a shocking defeat against Johor on Sunday to pulverise Kedah 9-1 today while Sabah and Pahang confirmed their spots in Round 2 in the 1Mas-MSN-KPM-Milo Boys National Under-16 Hockey Tournament at the Kuala Lumpur Hockey Stadium.

The east coast state, which lost to Johor 2-0, crushed Kedah to go top of Group A with six points and face Penang in the last preliminary round match on Tuesday. A win will catapult Terengganu into Round 2 which begins on Wednesday.

However, hot on Terengganu and Penang heels is Johor who will need to beat Kedah by more than seven goals to stay in contention for a spot in the next stage of the competition.

Sabah defeated Kuala Lumpur 2-0 and Pahang dented Kedah hopes with a 6-4 win. The results ensured both Sabah and Pahang of qualifying to Round 2 from Group C. Sabah topped the group with nine points followed by Pahang on six points.

In Group B, Malacca defeated Perlis 3-0 whilst Selangor and Sarawak churned out a 2-2 draw. The race to Round 2, however, remains a close battle between Perak, Malacca and Selangor. The Silver State and Malacca have six points to show from three matches while Selangor has four. Selangor go head to head against Perak tomorrow whilst Malacca face Sarawak.

In the Girls event, Selangor climbed to top of Group A with nine points and assured of a place in Round 2 following a 4-0 win over Sarawak today at the KLHA Stadium.

Kuala Lumpur and Johor are also through to the next stage from Group C. The city girls defeated Malacca 2-0 and Johor edged Perak 1-0. Both KL and Johor have six points from two matches.
