Women take shine off Diamond

Senior women off to a brilliant start in Perth

The national women’s senior team that is on a 13-day tour of Australia defeated the Diamonds Club 2-0 in the first friendly match in Perth on Monday.

Raja Norsharina scored Malaysia’s first goal in the fourth minute from a penalty corner and Nuraini Abd Rashid added the second  in the 55th minute to secure the first friendly win of the tour.

National women’s team head coach, Muhammad Dharma Raj was very pleased with his side’s performance and it was a great start to the tour.

“It was a tough game today as our opponents were pressing high from the very start of the game. We managed to get our first penalty corner from the counter attack we made and scored the first goal,” said Dharma Raj.

“The goal gave them the boost that they needed and they were much confident after that. The Australians were really hard on us but the girls managed to handle the pressure and played according to the plan. We got our second penalty corner of the game and we scored,” he added.

“We had five penalty corners but only converted two out of it. In having said that, we should have scored another but nevertheless I am proud of my team’s performance and we will keep going one game at a time.”

Both teams are down to play three matches on 15 June (Wednesday), 20 June and 22 June.

The Malaysians also have fixtures against  Western Australian Institute of Sports (WAIS) on 17 June (Friday) and against HEAT on 23 June (2.30pm).
