Perth (17 June, 2016): K. Dharmaraj’s national senior women’s team is going great guns in their 13-day tour of Australia.
The Malaysians defeated Western Australia Institute of Sports (WAIS) 2-0 on Friday, continuing where they left off with victories over Diamonds Club 2-0 and 4-2 respectively in earlier matches.
Hanis Nadiah Onn fired the first salvo with a 19th minute field goal and Nur Zafirah added the second in the 38th minute in similar fashion. The Malaysians dominated the match by making 15 circle penetrations against 10 by WAIS, had six shots on target and in the process earned two penalty corners while not giving the Australians any chance in the semi-circle.
“It was much colder than the two earlier matches. WAIS came with several current and former international players including Hockeyroos star Anna Flanagan, a drag flick specialist,” said Dharmaraj. “It was a much tougher match against WAIS who kept us very much busy in our own half.”
“We fought hard in defending and our back line had a good game. In the third quarter we found the opening from two quick counter attacks and led 2-0. We managed to get a couple of good scoring opportunities but fumbled in our attempts and credit to their goalkeeper who played an exceptionally well game too,” added Dharmaraj.
He added that the confidence in the team is growing steadily after three wins on the tour and the players are looking towards their remaining matches against Diamonds Club on June 20 and 22 June and HEAT (Holistic Elite Athlete Training) on 23 June.
