The goals continued to rain at Malaysian International Trade and Exhibition Centre (MiTEC) in the SEA Games Indoor Hockey event as our national women’s team opened their campaign with a resounding 19-0 win over Philippines earlier this evening.
The win comes after a 16-0 victory for Malaysia in the men’s category between both countries this morning.
The Malaysian Tigress played the entire match with high tenacity and vigour as they smashed 11 in the first half alone through a quadruple of field goals by Qasidah Halimi (2’, 9’,10’ & 20’), Elllya Ellias’s brace (2’FG & 8’FG), Nur Aisyah Yaacob (4’PC), Nor Aniza Rahmat (6’PC), Rabiatul Mohamed’s brace (7’FG & 11’FG) and Safiqah Mat Isa (15’PC).
The scoring spree then continued after the break with Ellya Ellias (22’FG) and Nor Aniza Rahmat (29’PC & 40’FG) completing their hat-tricks whilst Nur Aisyah Yaacob ended the match with four goals of her own by adding three more penalty corner conversions to her name in the 23rd, 31st and 32nd minute respectively as Noorain Ellya completed the goalscorers’ list with a field goal in the 39th minute.
Later on, the men’s national hockey indoor team continued their dominance with another convincing victory, this time thrashing Vietnam 15-0 in the last match of the day.
The Malaysians led 7-0 at half-time courtesy of field goals through Norsyafiq Sumantri (5’), Ashran Hamsani (8’), Muhammad Syafiq Syed (10’), Shafiq Yaacob (15’) with both Najmi Farizal (7’) and Najib Hassan (13’,18’) converting their penalty corners as the hosts headed into the break with a resounding lead.
The team led by Muhammad Amin Rahim stepped up the tempo in the second half by adding a further eight goals through braces from Najib Hassan (24’ FG, 31’ FG), Shafiq Yaacob (26’ FG, 36’ PC) and Irwan Nazali (37’ FG, 40’ PC) as well as goals by Muhamad Syafiq Syed (34’PC) and Muhd Amirul Aideed (39’ FG).
“I am satisfied with the team’s performance after both of our matches today as I managed to rotate the squad, however, we will have a tougher tests ahead when we face Thailand tomorrow and Indonesia on Wednesday. I hope this positive early results help us to continue the momentum and go all the way for the gold medal,” said Coach Amin after the match.
