University Kuala Lumpur (UniKL) stayed perfect with three wins out of three in this season’s TNBMHL Premier League as they overcame debutants TNB Thunderbolts 4-0 at the Kuala Lumpur Hockey Stadium today.
UniKL did most of the damage early in the first quarter as they raced to a 2-0 lead through Lachlan Gerald Stock’s field goal brace in the 4th and 8th minute of the match.
After the two goal wake up call, Thunderbolts’ youngsters picked up the pace and began to play a more physical game.
Their efforts only lasted till the 39th minute as UniKL’s Pakistan import, Muhd Aleem Bilal converted a penalty corner to make the score 3-0.
The third goal looked to have killed Thunderbolts’ spirits as they conceded again five minutes later through Muhd. Hafiz Zainol’s wonderfully taken field goal which ultimately put the match to rest.
Thunderbolts’ weary defense managed to somehow recollect themselves and hold UniKL to a scoreless 4th quarter limiting the damage to 4-0 until the final whistle.
With this third win on the trot; UniKL are definitely looking like early season title contenders with fine display of quick attacking play which racked up ten goals and conceding none so far.
UniKL’s manager, Mohd. Asmadi B. Mohd Nor expressed his approval of how his team has been playing and has no complaints whatsoever.
“The boys have been training well and the chemistry between players in all positions has been superb” said Asmadi.
He hopes that the winning momentum carries on when they play against UITM-KPT this Friday as well as other tougher challenges in the future.
“Our defense line has been on point throughout the first three matches which gave our attackers the freedom to create more chances up top. In my opinion, our players’ focus and discipline will play key roles when we meet tougher oppositions later on in the season” he concluded.
UniKL leads the standings with nine points, two ahead of second placed Terengganu Hockey Team (THT) who thrashed Tunku mahkota Ismail Sports School (SSTMI) 7-0 earlier today at SSTMI Hockey Stadium, Johor.
THT started the romp by taking a 3-0 lead in the first quarter through Jang Jonghyun (6th min, PC), Ismail Abu (10th min, FG) and Faizal Saari (14th min, PC).
Korean international, Jonghyun scored his second penalty corner of the day in the 29th minute to make it 4-0 at half-time.
The rout continued right after half-time when Firhan Ashaari scored a field goal in the 31st minute to further punish SSTMI’s sloppy defensive errors.
Faizal Saari grabbed his second of the match, this time a field goal in the 50th minute before Ameer Aiman Mohd. Saberi made it 7-0 by converting a penalty corner three minutes from time.
Meanwhile, Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) returned to winning ways when they overcame Maybank 2-1 in a tightly contested match in MBMB Hockey Stadium, Malacca whilst Kuala Lumpur Hockey Club (KLHC) won 7-3 against UITM-KPT in tonight’s 8pm match at Kuala Lumpur Hockey Stadium.
