Young Tigers End Brisbane Tour With Valuable Lesson

The Young Tigers ended their six-match series tour of Brisbane with a 0-6 defeat against the senior Queensland Hockey Team yesterday. Represented by several former senior internationals and junior players, Queensland HT registered its second win over the Malaysians following 3-1 victory four days earlier. The Young Tigers had also lost all four matches against the Australian national Under-21 side with results of 2-4, 2-5, 0-2, and 1-5. National junior team assistant coach I. Vikneswaran said the Young Tigers are preparing for the upcoming Sultan of Johor Cup in Johor Bahru (Oct 18-26) and Junior Asia Cup in Oman in December and the experience of playing against the Burras and Queensland HT has been of immense value. “We came here for exposure and to gain experience. Australia have always been super tough opponents and this is the kind of opposition we want the team to play against,” said Vikneswaran. “Generally, the players have learned a lot from this tour. In every match we tried out new combinations and that also had an impact on the results. Leaving the results aside, it was good experience for the players and the team,” he added. The Young Tigers will take a short break on their return home before resuming training after the conclusion of the Malaysia Games in Sarawak from Aug 17-24. “They will represent their respective states in the Malaysia Games hockey competition and we will resume national team training after the Malaysia Games,” added Vikneswaran.
