Johor Juniors end MBPJ unbeaten run

SMK Dato Bentara Luar Johor Juniors brought an end to Majlis Bandaraya Petaling Jaya (MBPJ) Tigers’ unbeaten run in Division One of the 2017 TNB Malaysian Junior Hockey League with a 3-2 win at the Majlis Bandaraya Petaling Jaya Hockey Stadium today.

The result sees defending champions Tengku Mahkota Ismail Sports School (SSTMI) Thunderbolt move to the top of Division One following a 10-0 mauling of Universiti Kuala Lumpur Young Guns at the KLHA Stadium in Jalan Pantai.

MBPJ Tigers took the lead in the seventh minute through Mohd Syabil Aizam Mohd Noor’s field goal but Johor Juniors levelled five minutes later from Muhammad Shafiq bin Hassan’s penalty corner. The Johor side went 2-1 up in the 43rd minute thanks to Alfarico Lance Liau Jr’s field goal.

Muhd Syafiq Izzudin Ibrahim then made it 2-2 in the 47th minute from a penalty corner but Muhammad Faris bin Ros Fadillah ensured all three points for the Johor Juniors through a field goal in the 53rd minute.

In other Division One matches, Bukit Jalil Sports School (BJSS) Thunderbolt thrashed Olak-Nurinsafi 9-0 in Pandamaran, Anderson Thunderbolt beat Bukit Jalil Sports School (BJSS) juniors 6-0 at the Ministry of Education Turf and Pahang Hockey Academy beat Politeknik Malaysia-Kpt 4-0.

SSTMI are on 16 points after seven matches followed by BJSS Thunderbolt on 15, MBPJ Tigers moved down to third (15 points), SMK Dato Bentara Luar Johor Juniors are fourth (14), AHP-MSP-Thunderbolt and Anderson Thunderbolt are fifth and sixth respectively (11 points) followed by UniKL Young Guns (9), Olak-Nurinsafi with five points from seven matches, Politeknik Malaysia (5) and BJSS Juniors are bottom with one point from eight matches.

SSTMI’s Amirul Firdaus Shamsudin led the scoring with three goals followed by the tournament’s current top scorer Mohd Akhimullah Annuar Esook with two, while Mohd Ariff Syafie Ishak, Mohd Shahrin Izzudin Shamsuri, Shello Silverius, Mohd Amirul Hamizan Azhar and Mohd Syawal Najmi Amiruddin scored one each.

SSTMI team manager Adam Izamry Idrus was happy with the result as the team’s orders were to win big.

“We want to emerge champions and the instructions were to win by big margins from now on. The team has found its momentum now and we must on. The first three matches were hard because seven of our players were involved in the Asian School Under-18 Championship in India. But our next match is on Friday against Olak-Nurinsafi and this will give us some much needed rest.”

Today’s results have thrown the race for the title wide open, leaving the next few matches, all mouth-watering affairs.
