Dato’ Seri Subahan Kamal, President of the Malaysian Hockey Confederation (MHC), has warned disgruntled local umpires not to threaten the national governing body over their ‘unhappiness’ in the payment for officiating in national leagues.
“Some umpires officiate in international matches but they refuse to blow in domestic competitions. We will write to the FIH that these umpires should not be allowed to officiate in international tournaments,” he said.
“If there are any umpires unhappy with payment, then they should look for other sports,” said Subahan, adding that the attitude of such official does not help in the development of the game.
“We have enough umpires in Malaysia. We can do without such attitude,” he disclosed today.
“Umpires claim that they are umpiring for the love of the game and assisting the development of the game. But they complain over lack of payment when umpiring is not their full-time job. They all hold steady jobs and the allowances for umpiring is additional pocket money for them.”
Subahan said that a substantial total amount is paid for umpires during the MHL and this adds on to the cost of organsing the League.
“We find the funds but have to be prudent in our spending and within our means.”
