A late surge saw Selangor pass the test to secure a 3-1 victory over Penang in the TNB Women’s Tun Abdul Razak Cup 2024 today at the Johor Hockey Stadium, Taman Daya, Johor Bahru.
It was Selangor’s second consecutive win in this ninth edition of the tournament. They climbed to the top of Pool A on six points while Penang, who played three matches and lost one, are in second spot despite sharing the same points, and Pahang third on three points.
Nur Atira Mohamad Ismail set the wheel in motion for Selangor with the opening goal three minutes into the match, but Ainnur Insyirah Khairul equalized 1-1 for Penang in the 23rd minute via a field goal.
It was a mixed first half for both sides as far as chances were concerned. The deadlock was finally broken in the third quarter through Suhaila Sata’s 33rd minute field goal while national player Nurul Syafiqah Mat Isa extended the lead to 3-1 via a penalty stroke conversion two minutes later.
In Thursday’s opening match, Selangor carved out a narrow 2-1 win over host Johor. Following a rest day tomorrow (Sunday, 6th Oct) for all teams, Selangor will return to the pitch on Monday and go head-to-head against Perak, who defeated Pahang 2-1 but lost 2-3 to Penang.
In another Group A encounter, Pahang defeated Johor 4-0 with goals from Wan Norfaiezah Mohd Saiuti (25th), Surizan Awang Nor (38th), and a brace from Wan Nur Syafiqah Syahirah (49th, 51st).
Malacca held on to defeat Negeri Sembilan 1-0 in a Group B match, courtesy of Umi Nur Absarina Azhar’s penalty corner conversion at the stroke of the the third quarter buzzer. It was Malacca’s second victory in three matches. They had earlier lost 1-3 to the Young Tigress and secured a 3-2 win against the Malaysian Armed Forces (ATM).
Terengganu too showed they are determined to end the day by claiming three points against ATM, and this they did with a come-from-behind 2-1 win.
Juliani Mohd Din pushed ATM ahead with a 20th minute penalty corner conversion, but the east coast state equalized 1-1 through Nur Hazwani Sofiya in the 38th minute and Nurul Ain Nordin sealed a 2-1 victory from a 47th minute field goal.
