Pahang sealed their spot in the men's semi-finals after a hard-earned 3-2 win over Melaka in a top-of-the-table Group B match in the 60th TNB Tun Abdul Razak Cup at the National Hockey Stadium today.
Despite the defeat, Melaka too are through to the semi-finals after Perlis ended their preliminary round campaign with a 3-2 win over Selangor, which meant Melaka remained in second spot tied on 12 points with a better goal difference and a game in hand against Police on Friday.
Melaka did start the match against Pahang on the front foot with Mohamad Faid Farhadh Mohamad Shah giving them the lead in the third minute. Pahang equalised through a penalty corner by Muhammad Idris Samad in the 13th minute, but Melaka regained the lead with a penalty corner conversion of their own through Muhammad Muhibuddin Moharam in the 20th minute.
From then on the tide turned in Pahang's favour as they piled on the pressure and equalised through Syamil Azim Dzulkafly in the 25th minute before Ismail Abu grabbed the winner in the 47th minute.
Pahang look likely to finish as group winners on 15 points. That could only change in the unlikely event they lose their final group match against Selangor on Friday while Melaka beat Police and the results wipe out a five-goal difference currently in Pahang's favour.
Perlis required a huge victory against Selangor to make up a 12-goal deficit required to dislodge Melaka from second spot, but had to settled for a 3-2 win.
That was thanks to goals from Syed Mohamad Syakir Syed Cholan in the 22nd minute, Mohammad Ariff Aiman Md Junid in the 41st minute and Raimi Iqbal Rusdi in the 42nd minute after Muhammad Danish Aqasa Khairulazli had given Selangore the lead in the 10th minute, while Muhammad Hafif Elkan Rerasa @ Nordin reduced the deficit for them in the 45th minute.
In the other Group B match, Singapore registered their first point of the competition after holding Police to a 1-1 draw. Mohammed Sabri Yuhari gave Singapore the lead from a penalty corner in the 29th minute and Police equalised through Baljit Singh Sarjab in the 37th minute, also from a penalty corner.
Group A, Johor confirmed their spot in the semi-finals after coming from behind to beat Armed Forces 2-1 in their final preliminary round match.
Armed Forces took a surprise lead with a field goal from Muhamad Nazrey Din in the 15th minute, before a brace of penalty corner conversions by Mohd Kamaruzaman Kamaruddin in the 40th and 59th minutes gave Johor the victory.
Defending champions Perak blew their chances of securing their semi-finals spot after battling out a 4-4 draw against Terengganu which means the battle between the two for the remaining semi-final spot will go down to the wire in the final round of preliminary matches on Friday.
Terengganu took the lead in the 22nd minute from a penalty corner by Muhammad Sufi Ismat Rohulamin, which was cancelled out by Syed Mohamad Syafiq Syed Cholan also from a penalty corner in the 28th minute.
Perak then found themselves in the lead in the 37th minute when Azril Misron struck a field goal, but Terengganu were able to level the score six minutes later from a penalty corner through Mohamad Akhimullah Anuar Esook.
Mohamad Zulhamizan Awang Abas put Perak in the lead again in the 48th minute, but Mohamad Akhimullah equalised again for Terengganu from a penalty stroke before netting his hattrik to bring the score to 4-3 in favour of Terengganu in the 52nd minute. Shazrul Imran Nazli equalised for Perak in the 60th minute to deny Terengganu a surprise victory.
The result sees Perak needing to at least draw their final Group A match against Armed Forces on Friday, while Terengganu will be hoping for the latter to spring a surprise while they need nothing less than a victory against Kuala Lumpur to pip Perak to the semi-finals.
