Pahang beat Johor 2-0 to set up a mouthwatering final clash with Perak, who edged Melaka 2-1, in the men's semi-finals of the 60th TNB Tun Abdul Razak Cup at the National Hockey Stadium today.
Having breezed through the preliminary round, Pahang retained their 100 percent record thanks to two penalty corner conversions by Muhammad Hafiz Mohd Zauri @ Mohd Zahari in the 38th minute and Muhammad Idris Samad in the 43rd minute, which also meant Pahang extended their goal count in the tournament to a whopping 32 goals thus far, with just five conceded.
Defending champions Perak will thus have to dig deep if they hope to retain their title tomorrow, after being stretched to the limit by a fighting Melaka today.
Perak took an early lead in the sixth minute when they were awarded a penalty stroke, from which Syed Mohamad Syafiq Syed Cholan made not mistake from the spot. But Melaka pushed on for an equaliser and apt got their reward when Muhammad Nur Asyraf Ishak converted a penalty corner in the 32nd minute.
It was anybody's game from then on as both sides pushed for the winning goal, but it wasn't until the 59th minute that Perak made a breakthrough with Siaful Sharil Saiful Bahri converted a penalty corner. Perak then held on to their slender lead to seal their spot in the final.
In the classification matches, Penang beat Kuala Lumpur 3-1 to place eighth thanks to a brace from Izwan Firdaus Ahmad Tajuddin in the 22nd and 24th minutes, with Eswaran George adding their third in the 35th minute, while Kuala Lumpur's goal was scored by Muhammad Ridhwan Muzairi in the 32nd minute.
Armed Forces beat Police 5-0 to place ninth with a brace from Mohamad Sufian Marsom in the first and 37th minutes getting the ball rolling, before Muhamad Nazrey Din, Mohamad Fahmi Abdullah and Muhammad Ikwan Ishak completed the scoring for them in the 43rd, 45th and 59th minutes respectively.
In the 11th-12th place playoff, Selangor beat Negeri Sembilan 4-2 with Muhammad Hafif Elkan Rerasa @ Nordin opening the scoring in the 19th minute and Muhammad Zul Fitri Md Zin doubled the score for them in the 22nd minute.
Negeri Sembilan fought back to draw level with goals from Muhammad Harizh Iman Chairil Anwar in the 41st minute and Muhammad Iqhmal Rahmat Mohd Yuzlan in the 45th minute, before a Faridzul Afiq Mohd brace in the 47th and 56th minutes put the result beyond doubt for Selangor.
