Selangor made their intentions loud and clear with a 5-1 thumping of Penang, while Pahang and Penang played out a 3-3 draw as the women's competition entered the Super Group stage in the TNB Tun Abdul Razak Cup at the National Hockey Stadium today.
Having won their preliminary round group with not only a 100 percent record, but without conceding a single goal against the six they scored, Selangor started on the front foot with Fatin Shafika Mohd Sukri scoring a field goal in the fourth minute.
That was followed by a brace from Nur Idrina Asnida Mohd Yusmi in the 14th and 45th minutes, before Fatin Naimah Zaki and Nurafiqah Syahzani Azhar completed the scoring for them in the 46th and 47th minutes respectively.
Ainnur Insyirah Mohd Khairul Anwar converted a penalty corner in the 58th minute which was scant consolation for Penang, though it went down as the first goal Selangor conceded in the tournament thus far.
Pahang too had breezed through the preliminary group stage with a 100 percent record with an impressive 24 goals scored and just one conceded, but Melaka surprised them today.
Wan Nurfatihah Md Saiuti seemed to set the tone for another domination by Pahang with an early field goal in the fourth minute.
But that early shocker was what Melaka needed as they sprung into action, taking the game to Pahang and racing to a 3-1 lead with goals from Natasya Diana Abdullah in the 12th minute, Liyana Aqilah Mohd Sepawi in the 20th minute and Khairunnisa Ayuni Mohd Sharuddin in the 23rd minute.
Melaka then came under severe pressure from a Pahang fightback, which eventually paid dividents when the Malaysia Games champions clawed back to level the score with goals from Nuraini Abdul Rashid through a penalty corner in the 26th minute and Dian Nursyakira Najwa Al-Wadqar Nazeri in the 31st minute.
The women's Super Group continues on Friday with Selangor taking on Melaka, while Pahang play Penang.
