KL In Doubt After Defeat, While Pahang Flex Muscles

Defending women's champions Kuala Lumpur stumbled to a humbling 3-0 defeat to Selangor at the National Hockey Stadium today to put their TNB Tun Abdul Razak Cup 2022 title defence in jeopardy, while Pahang assumed the favourites tag after another convincing 3-0 victory over Negeri Sembilan. After edging Melaka 1-0 on Friday, Selangor's victory over Kuala Lumpur put them a top Group A to virtually book their semi-finals spot. Nurafiqah Syahzani Azhar's hattrick of field goals in the 12th, 46th and 49th minutes did the job for Selangor, while Kuala Lumpur now need a win against Melaka in a do-or-die mission for both tomorrow to salvage any hope of a title defence. Melaka and Terengganu played out a 2-2 draw in the other Group A fixture, meaning both will now have to win their final group match tomorrow, Melaka having fallen to a 1-0 defeat to Selangor on Friday, while Terengganu lost 3-2 to Kuala Lumpur. For a while today, it looked like Melaka were cruising to victory after racing to a 2-0 lead with penalty corner conversions by Khairunnisa Ayuni Mohd Sharuddin in the 14th minute and Nurshafiqha Ishak in the 38th minute. Staring at an early exit, Terengganu dug deep to claw back and restore some hope of survival with a 50th minute penalty corner conversion by Siti Nur Irdina Mohd Nor before Norhasikin Halim drew level with a field goal a minute later. Following up on their Malaysia Games success, Pahang maintained their firm grip on Group B with another dominant performance, adding another three goals without reply in their victory over Negeri Sembilan to add to the 12-goal whitewash of the Armed Forces on Friday. Negeri Sembilan did however look capable of holding the Pahang onslaught at bay for most of the first half, before their resistance was broken by two penalty corner conversions by Nurul Fatin Fatiah Azman in the 26th minute and Nuraini Abdul Rashid in the 34th minute, before Nur Shazwani Zakaria completed the rout with a field goal in the 37th minute. In the other Group B fixture, Armed Forces overcame Singapore 1-0 through a Nur Amalina Ishak penalty corner in the 12th minute to salvage some pride after their heavy battering at the hands of Pahang a day earlier. Only two Group B fixtures are scheduled for tomorrow with Singapore taking on Negri Sembilan, while Pahang look to secure their semi-finals berth when they face Penang.   Results (Women) Group A: Terengganu 2 Melaka 2, Selangor 3 Kuala Lumpur 0 Group B: Armed Forces 1 Singapore 0, Negri Sembilan 0 Pahang 3.
