Adam’s Glowing Obsession

Muhammad Adam Ashraf Mohd Johari turns 18 today (Saturday, 23rd March). And the Tumpat-born lad from Kelantan wants an unforgettable birthday gift.

He was only 17 when he represented the Young Tigers at the 2023 Junior World Cup in Kuala Lumpur. Adam’s outstanding showmanship as a midfielder saw him score three goals – one each against Belgium, New Zealand and Chile.

Like a caterpillar that morphs into a butterfly, Adam has this glowing obsession with donning a national senior team jersey a.k.a Speedy Tigers.

“Deep inside me I always had this strong desire to play for the senior team. When I was listed among the 46 players for national team training by coach Sarjit (Singh) I could not believe my luck. Honestly, I felt my prayers had been answered. I was driven by great passion to be called up for senior team training at this age,” said Adam with a wry smile.

“For a moment I was excited. Then I got nervous. It dawned upon me that I would need to fight for my place against the big boys (experienced senior team players). It became a huge challenge for me to overcome,” said Adam, adding that he aims to learn from the seniors.

“There are also 10 other players from last year’s JWC squad vying for a shot in the senior team. But I am enjoying my game playing alongside senior players. Being here is a wonderful feeling and I have been playing my best on the field.”

“The JWC last year will always be a memorable moment for me. It was a worthy experience – it made my ‘game grow’ and took me to the next level,” added Adam, who admitted that there were times he would read his notes in preparation for the SPM examination in the midst of the JWC.

“Immediately after the JWC I did not play hockey for several weeks as I was seriously focused on the coming exams. My SPM results will be out in a month’s time. I intend to pursue a course in business administration,” he said.

While hopes may not always be fulfilled, Adam said he will be least disappointed if he does not make it into the squad of 30 players which will be announced on April 1.

“I am still eligible to play in the next JWC tournament if I am selected. To compete in the JWC for the second time is a blessing indeed,” said Adam.
