Malaysian Tigers Meet Great Britain For Place In Tokyo 2020

The men’s national hockey team will meet Great Britain for a place in the Tokyo 2020 in the Olympic qualifying match after the draw was held at headquarters of the International Hockey Federation (FIH) in Lausanne, Switzerland just now.

In a special viewing session with the media hosted by the Malaysian Hockey Confederation (MHC), President, Dato’ Sri Subahan Kamal was also in attendance alongside Deputy President, Prof. Dato’ Dr Shamala Subramaniam and national men’s head coach, Roelant Oltmans at MHC’s headquarters.

The two qualifying matches will be held on 2nd and 3rd November with the Lee Valley Hockey & Tennis Centre, London designated as the venue for both matches.

“This is the hardest draw that we could have faced but it is the reality that we have to accept. This is not a problem for us, we know what we have to do and we have to believe in our capabilities.

“I believe every team has its weakness and  this is what we have to take advantage of when we face Great Britain,” added Roelant.

The national men’s team will set up base in South Korea for the final leg of preparations where they will leave on the 19th September and return to Malaysia on the 29th September.

A 20-man squad has been selected for the final leg of preparations which will see Malaysia play four test matches against the Korean national team. These test matches will serve as a barometer for Oltmans to decide on the final 18 man squad for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Qualifier.
